I had a good time with Supergirl.

Going in, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. DC's track record over the last several years has been a bit all over the place, but this ended up being one of the better entries from the DC Universe in recent memory.

The biggest reason it works is Supergirl herself.

Her portrayal felt believable throughout the movie. She felt like her own character instead of simply being a gender-swapped Superman. The film does a good job of letting her strengths, flaws, and personality shine through, which made it easy to get invested in her journey.

I also appreciated how the movie handled Superman.

A lot of superhero spinoffs struggle with this. Either the bigger hero is completely ignored, making you wonder where they are, or they show up so much that the movie starts feeling like it belongs to them instead. Supergirl manages to find a good balance. When Superman appears near the end, it helps connect the movie to the larger DC Universe without making it feel like "a Superman movie featuring Supergirl."

Not everything worked for me, though.

My biggest nitpick was Krypto peeing on the Superman image. It isn't some movie-breaking moment, and I understand the joke they were going for, but it felt out of place. That's your guy. Out of everything Krypto could have peed on, it had to be Superman? It's a small complaint in the grand scheme of things, but it definitely got an eye roll from me.

Thankfully, moments like that are pretty minor compared to everything the movie gets right.

Overall, I enjoyed Supergirl. It has a likable lead, a strong connection to the wider DC Universe, and enough confidence to let its main character stand on her own. More importantly, it left me wanting to see where this version of Supergirl goes next.

That's about the best compliment I can give it.
